Columbus Day - What is That?

Today is Columbus Day! BUT, what is it, and why are we celebrating it? Well try to explain with the help of History.com, but effectively, we are celebrating the fact that Christopher Columbus discovered Asia by landing in Cuba. Odd, but we like celebrating mistakes in America. They are very often the foundations for great things. Columbus Day is a U.S. holiday that commemorates the landing of Christopher Columbus in the Americas on October 12, 1492. Christopher Columbus was an Italian-born explorer who set sail in August 1492, bound for Asia with backing from the Spanish monarchs King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. Columbus intended to chart a western sea route to China, India and the fabled gold and spice islands of Asia. Instead, he landed in the Bahamas, becoming the first European to explore the Americas since the Vikings established colonies in Greenland and Newfoundland during the 10th century. Later that October, Columbus sighted Cuba and believed it was mainland China; in December the expedition found Hispaniola, which he thought might be Japan. There, he established Spains first colony in the Americas with 39 of his men. In March 1493, Columbus returned to Spain in triumph, bearing gold, spices and Indian captives. The explorer crossed the Atlantic several more times before his death in 1506. It wasnt until his third journey that Columbus finally realized he hadnt reached Asia but instead had stumbled upon a continent previously unknown to Europeans. History.com OOPS! Third time is a charm!

Our offices in the US will be closed on Monday and Tuesday of this week in celebration of Independence Day. As not all of our offices are in the US, we thought we would highlight the nature of the holiday, and assure everyone in our home office in the UK that we are still on On the Bus!  

With the help of Military.com: On July 4, 1776, the thirteen colonies claimed their independence from England, an event which eventually led to the formation of the United States. Each year on July 4th, also known as Independence Day, Americans celebrate this historic event. Conflict between the colonies and England was already a year old when the colonies convened a Continental Congress in Philadelphia in the summer of 1776. Richard Henry Lee of Virginia presented a resolution with the famous words: "Resolved: That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved." Lee's words were the impetus for the drafting of a formal Declaration of Independence.  On July 1, 1776, the Continental Congress reconvened, and on the following day, the Lee Resolution for independence was adopted. On July 4th, the Declaration was officially adopted. John Hancock, President of the Continental Congress, signed the Declaration of Independence. It is said that John Hancock signed his name "with a great flourish" so England's "King George can read that without spectacles!"

Cocktail Friday - the Impact of Patriotic Branding

It is Cocktail Friday at TSWUS, and we are headed into a long weekend celebrating the birth of the United States of America. What better post could we make, than one highlighting the "artfully" redesigned "Patriotic" packaging that seems ubiquitous on these American holidays. What impact does re-packaging have on sales during patriotic holidays? Can the re-packaging stand alone, or does it need to be combined with advertising support to maximize product sales? Do patriotic holidays impact sales more significantly than family holidays like Halloween or Christmas? Why am I compelled to buy the Red, White and Blue six-pack? 

These are all key questions to ponder when walking down the beer aisle this weekend. Cinco De Mayo

Q: Is Cinco de Mayo the same thing as Mexican Independence Day?   A: No, Mexican Independence Day is on September 16, but Diez y Seis de Septiembre was too clunky to catch on with beer distributors.   Q: Why is Cinco de Mayo so popular in the United States?   A: Over 30 million Americans are of Mexican descent, and the rest will take any opportunity to celebrate a French military defeat.   To quote the satirical newspaper The Onion  
Today we mark Mexicos defeat of the French in a day long battle at Puebla. Why do a multitude of Americans celebrate a minor military victory in a neighboring nation? Honestly, because we like a good party.  We like to learn about our neighbors.  We like eating tacos. 
It doesnt really matter why at this stage of the game. 
What matters is that we DO. 
In a big way. 
Sometimes advertising is about creating a movement where there really isnt one. The Tecate Beer and pitchers of Margaritas consumed today are testament that it works.

Laissez les bons temps rouler - It is Mardis Gras!

Let the good times role. It is "Fat Tuesday". 

According to History.com, " Many historians believe that the first American Mardi Gras took place on March 3, 1699, when the French explorers Iberville and Bienville landed in what is now Louisiana, just south of the holidays future epicenter: New Orleans. They held a small celebration and dubbed the spot Point du Mardi Gras. In the decades that followed, New Orleans and other French settlements began marking the holiday with street parties, masked balls and lavish dinners. When the Spanish took control of New Orleans, however, they abolished these rowdy rituals, and the bans remained in force until Louisiana became a U.S. state in 1812. 
Louisiana is the only state in which Mardi Gras is a legal holiday."

Mardi Gras, and it's unique relationship to Louisiana, is a great example of how culturally different the US is from region to region. Advertising to New York and to New Orleans isn't apples to apples. If that is the approach it won't resonate for both audiences. Response patterns, collections issues, offer sensitivity and imagery may all need to be adjusted depending on the geographic and demographic targets you are trying to reach.

Washingtons Birthday is a United States federal holiday celebrated on the third Monday in February to honor George Washington, the first President of the United States, who was born on February 22, 1732. This event is now widely known as Presidents Day and is often used to honor all who have served as president. We wish you a safe and happy holiday!

Why is our US office closed? As we are now part of a larger international family, we thought it advisable to highlight why our offices are closed on certain holidays that are not observed across all of our territories.
In a concise recap from History.com: "July 4th has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, but the tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution (1775-83). In June 1776, representatives of the 13 colonies then fighting in the revolutionary struggle weighed a resolution that would declare their independence from Great Britain. On July 2nd, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later its delegates adopted the Declaration of Independence, a historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. From 1776 until the present day, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence."

Derby Day

Cocktail Friday. Kentucky Derby.  One would expect mint julip, so here it is:
Ingredients: 1 teaspoon Powdered sugar, 2 oz. Bourbon whiskey, 2 teaspoons Water, 4 Mint leaves
Preparation: In a highball glass gently muddle the mint, sugar and water. Fill the glass with cracked ice, add Bourbon and stir well until the glass is well frosted. Garnish with a mint sprig.
Served: On the rocks; poured over ice
But that's what we will serve at tomorrow's Race Day Party.  Today, we sip Tab Cola and ready our finest millinery!

G.I. is a noun used to describe the soldiers of the United States Army and airmen of the United States Army Air Forces — and occasionally for U.S. Marines and shore bound sailors.

We love this “Cut Paper” art, and have the whole zodiac collection. It is a stunning art form to watch in process, and we are lucky to have collected a lot of it throughout Asia.

Happy Canada Day to all of my friends and colleagues in the Great White North!As it is also Art Tuesday here at Elarbee Media, I thought I would throw in a picture of one of my favorite statues in Montreal known familiarly as “The Butter People."The Illuminated Crowd, a sculpture where 65 people of all ages, race, facial expressions and conditions are depicted on four platforms, illustrates the degradation of the human race and symbolizes the fragility of the human condition.

Created by Franco-British artist, Raymond Mason, this unique public sculpture is made from stratified polyester resin with polyurethane paint and is located just outside the main gate of McGill University.

Happy Holiday Father's Day

With Father’s Day around the corner, I have been reminded of the valuable business lessons my father taught me. They weren't business lessons at the time, but rather character lessons that I now try to employ in my business life. There are some real gems among them (some not repeatable outside of the family).Of all of the core business values I learned at my dad’s knee, the one that has always resonated most with me as a manager of people was the following: “Kelly Danielle, you don’t need everyone to like you and be your friend, but you do need everyone to know that you are fair.”
As a business owner, I often think of a 3x3 resin square that sat on his desk with a quote that read, “The world isn't interested in the storms you encountered, but whether or not you brought in the ship.”My father was dedicated to his job, but even more so to his family. He raised, educated and loved us. He gifted us his values, both business and otherwise.Thanks for everything, Dad!
